Couple’s services to sport recognised „„ By Fraser Walker-Pearce A CRICKET-MAD husband and wife were made life members of the Canterbury Metro Cricket Association in recognition of decades of work in the sport. Riccarton Cricket Club’s Tim Murdoch was recognised at the association’s recent annual general meeting, for his involvement in the club since 1974 as a player, committee member, and treasurer among other titles. While Mr Murdoch’s wife Lesley was recognised for a long-playing career including representing the country in two world cup tournaments, her work growing the women’s game, and she was also a member of the
New Zealand Cricket Board. Mr Murdoch was humbled by the award, and said he was one of many who have contributed to Riccarton’s success over the years. “It’s nice to be recognised for the work you do, I’ve been involved for a long time and am passionate about being involved with the club – I’ve done my share along with lots of others,� he said. Mr Murdoch said it was a “lovely� moment for him and his wife to be named as life members. Mrs Murdoch is also a wellknown sports journalist and radio presenter on Newstalk ZB. She said she “takes her hat off � to other volunteers involved in cricket at the grass roots level.
Petition against funeral home activity unsuited for a residential area, and the lowering of property values. It said some residents have cultural values and religious beliefs that go against having a funeral home so close to a living area. The petition was sent to the city council’s resource consents unit chief planner Odette White. Consultation on the resource consent closed on October 13. Seven formal submissions were received with two in support of the funeral home and five against.

Funeral home Lamb and Hayward lodged a resource consent application to build a new building at 286 Halswell Junction Rd, near the intersection with Wigram Rd. The petition, started by Halswell resident Barbara Kimber, opposed the application because it would create traffic congestion, it was a commercial
The hearing will be heard by commissioner David Mountfort in about two months. Birchgate Lane resident and supporter of the petition Ben Blower said it was sad the 488 supporters who signed the petition would have no say on the matter due to a limited notification sent out by the city council earlier this month. “Our street has banded together because we are pretty opposed to it. The amount of traffic it is going to cause and having a constant reminder of death over
the road from you every day,� he said. The 1222m2 funeral home will house two chapels, an associate memorial garden, a lounge, a administration wing and an on-site car park for 181 vehicles.  The hours of operation are planned to be restricted between 8.30am-9pm Monday to Sunday and funerals are programmed to start 10am, 2pm and 5.30pm. Lamb and Hayward chief executive Stephen Parkyn told Western News earlier this month the whole south-west area is developing and

THERE IS absolutely no argument from me that cycleways are a wonderful asset to the city. However, it is a balancing act to ensure building them does not negatively impact residents and businesses. The Quarryman’s Trail that will go through several suburbs could take away a lot of residential and business parking (page 3). Since the earthquakes, parking in the suburbs has been at a premium. It will be interesting to see how this pans out. There is real opposition growing out in Halswell against Lamb and Hayward’s resource consent to put in a funeral home. Nearly 500 people have signed the petition in opposition (front page). Petition organiser Ben Blower says the amount of traffic it is going to produce, plus the “constant reminder of death,” are among the issues. Hei kona – Shelley Robinson

Car parks loss concern By Caitlin Miles and Georgia O’Connor-Harding UP TO 70 per cent of parking could be lost on major roads, with speed limit and road layout changes, if a new $15.5 million cycleway is developed. The city council’s Quarryman’s Trail is proposed to start in Halswell and would run through Addington, Hoon Hay, Spreydon and Somerfield, finishing in the central city. The city council estimated 70 per cent of street parking on Antigua St, between Hazeldean Rd and Moorhouse Ave, would be lost. Strickland St between Roker and Burns Sts could lose 60 per cent of on-road parking, along with 50 per cent of spaces along Frankleigh St and on the southern side of Sparks Rd and part of the northern side. Hoon Hay Pharmacy owner Glennis Dunstan said she is worried about the impact on her business as people won’t be able to park out front and “pop in” anymore. “People will park right outside so they can pop in and grab what they need and head off again, if the parks go it won’t be

convenient,” Ms Dunstan said. Her business is located on Sparks Rd and in the consultation plan the car parks out the front of her business may go to make way for a twolane cycleway. The newly-released consultation plans on the Quarryman’s Trail cycleway involve removing car parks along many residential roads changing two roundabouts and dropping speed limits. Halswell Community Project chairwoman Chrys Horn said she is “really keen” to see the cycleway happen. “Parking shouldn’t be an issue here because I guess the more
free parking we provide for people the more it encourages people to have cars and the more congestion we have,” she said. She said cycling is a lot cheaper for everyone and the residential areas affected will have a “fantastic cycleway” going past their houses. The plans also involve reducing the speed on James Hight Drive and Roker St from 50km/h to 30km/h and changing the Frankleigh, Lyttelton St and Sparks Rd roundabout and Hoon Hay Rd and Sparks Rd roundabout to traffic lights. City council head of
transport, Chris Gregory, said making these changes will improve traffic flow in the area and make the intersections safer for cyclists. Consultation on the cycleways closes on November 10. In Brief FERNERY RE-OPENED The Mona Vale Fernery was reopened to the public last Thursday. It has been closed for the past three months to allow contractors to repair damage caused by the earthquakes and strengthen the building. The fernery was originally built for the New Zealand International Exhibition held in Hagley Park in 1906. When the exhibition ended in 1907, the fernery was sold to millionaire Annie Townsend who had it dismantled and reassembled at Mona Vale. The fernery’s opening hours are from 7am to 4pm. HALSWELL HOUSE FIRE A house and deck were damaged by fire last Wednesday on Balcairn St, Halswell. No one was injured. The Fire Service was alerted to the incident at 10.53pm. Firefighters took about an hour to contain the blaze. Crews from Sockburn and Addington attended the incident. BOARD MEETING The first Halswell-HornbyRiccarton community board meeting will be held next Wednesday at 4pm. It will be held at the Fendalton Service Centre on the corner of Jeffreys and Clyde Rd. At the meeting the new chair and deputy chairperson will be elected.

Quarry issues Yaldhurst Rural Residents’ Association chairwoman Sara Harnett Kikstra writes about issues the Yaldhurst area are facing There are many issues in Yaldhurst particularly in terms of quarries and their flow-on effects. The setback distance from a rural quarry zone is now between 10m and 20m depending on the landscape treatment. However, it has become more common to apply for a resource consent outside the quarry zone on rural land. While the commissioners involved in the hearing can determine the setback distance, the benchmark is the rural quarry zone distance which the applicant would be pushing for. Dust experts have recommended a minimum distance of 250m which is consistent with other areas and in many cases 500m. Why is the setback so important? Without a separation distance it is impossible to mitigate the effects of dust, noise, amenity etc. What this effectively means is that all rural land and it appears even public reserves in the south-west of the city are up for grabs. To compound this problem city council and Environment Canterbury enforcement have been completely ineffectual. Winstone Aggregates quarry cur-

rently has an abatement notice for excavating beneath the water table. There are indications other operators at Miners Rd have also done the same. Many of you may be aware of the aggregate groups application to excavate beneath the water table, this was declined but has been appealed by two quarries. The experts in that case stated there is the potential to contaminate Christchurch’s groundwater. The council’s hydrologist has also stated this could occur from a concentration of too many quarries over the aquifers. These issues are the tip of the iceberg and councillor Jimmy Chen appears to have no conception or interest in what is happening in the rural sector of his ward. Consequently, there is no advocate around the city council table and people in Yaldhurst are hugely stressed trying to maintain some semblance of quality of life. •Hornby councillor Jimmy Chen did not wish to respond to the column. He said the election campaign was the time when any issues of this nature should have aired.
A COUPLE of kitchen fires this week including another instance of people getting hurt, burnt in this case, at a Dallington address last Thursday. One out of every three house fires starts because of cooking. And about one in three of these ends in someone getting hurt. Very occasionally someone dies. So easy to stop, just by ‘looking when you’re cooking’. A passerby in Blenheim Rd called in a building fire last Saturday morning, having seen black smoke drifting around the structure. Two fire trucks responded and discovered the culprit, a steam train further back on the railway line. It’s interesting that once upon a time such smoke would be normal and expected. Now it’s so out of place that people report it. Which is a good thing. Because 10 false alarms are better than not being called because someone isn’t sure or
thinks smoke is okay. In a real fire a minute’s delay can make an immense difference. Barbecue time is just about here. Which means gas cylinders not used for six months are likely to be fired up. When hooking one up after that time it’s a good idea to slap a detergent or water mix around the connector. Spiders, bugs and old fash-
ioned dirt can partially block the threads. Unburnt gas is not a great mix with a flaming burner. Three duckling rescues this week. I’m sure we only get the difficult ones and people are handling local wildlife rescues themselves. Which is reassuring. Humanity still has a heart. Hopefully always will.

The supermarket won a gold medal for its country pork sausage and two silver medals, one for its old English beef and another for the bacon, cheese and tomato gourmet beef sausage, in what was their “best year yet.” Pak ’n Save Riccarton butchery manager Brent Ellmers said the team was “over the moon” and it gave them a “real kick” to be recognised for their hard work. The bar’s current owner, Richard Dear, could not sell the business to the prospective buyers he had lined up, which led to the closure. He said the landlord would not allow the lease to be taken over by the prospective buyers. “I was keen to get rid of it, keen to sell it. Found myself a cash buyer and the landlord said no,” Mr Dear said. The Snafu Bar and Restaurant building is owned by Shopping Centre Investments Ltd. Senior property manager Joanna Koster said she would not comment on why Shopping Centre Investments Ltd would not allow the lease to be passed onto the new owners. “That is a commercial business matter between the current tenant and the landlord,” she said. About four full-time staff would lose their jobs along with part-time staff and security. Mr Dear said there were no issues with the buyers as far as he was concerned. “They (the landlord) just made

Flowers make you feel better
By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A TEAM from Bunnings Warehouse Riccarton have built two raised flower beds for a woman dedicated to making life for the unwell a little brighter. Janine Thomson, of Darfield, heads around different plant growers and gardens, picking up flowers to gift to sick patients around the city. When Bunnings Warehouse Riccarton was asked for a donation of plants, the team, led by activity organiser Amy Maclennan, rallied together to build two raised garden beds recently. This was so Ms Thomson could grow her own flowers to build posies for the community. “At the moment we are using donated flowers which is amazing and I am very grateful for those flowers. But we also like to incorporate our own flowers we grow ourselves,” she said. The Flower Garden New Zealand charity delivers about 35 posies once a week to places including Christchurch Hospital, Christchurch Women’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House South Island. Her passion for helping others through flowers was ignited after she had a car accident when she was 17.

At a New Zealand and Australian Tramway Museums competition the cable car, based at Ferrymead, won two Council of Tramway Museums of Australasia awards. The tram was a restored cable car trailer called Mornington No.111 that used to travel on Dunedin’s High St. Christchurch Tramway Historical Society management committee member and volunteer Don McAra said next month the society will put on an event to get more members involved in the society. Pupils help those in need By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE DETERMINATION of three Avonhead School pupils to help others led to the whole school holding a food bank collection to donate to the City Mission. A mufti-day and canned food collection was organised last Friday by year 4 pupils Holly O’Farrell, Katie Fogarty and Talia Forster. The idea was formed during a weekly reflection session when Holly wrote about how she would like to help homeless people. “I wrote in my reflection that I want to learn how to bake for homeless people, but then we wanted to change it into a mufti-day,” she said. With help from her classmates Katie and Talia and year 3-4 teacher Toni
Carter, the idea was pitched to the student council and they organised for city missioner Michael Gorman to collect the donation. “Holly has quite a social conscience, which is unusual in such a young person, because she has a passion for wanting to help others. So we decided to look at how we could help people on a bigger scale,” Mrs Carter said. The pupils aimed to collect between 300 to 400 cans from the mufti-day. Mr Gorman spoke to the year 3-4 class about the role of the City Mission and how the food bank benefits others. The City Mission’s food bank collects donated food to distribute to those in need. They give about 30 clients emergency food each day.

Daegan Wells
Exploring art history in the red Artist Daegan Wells recently received an award which will allow him to focus on his latest project. He spoke to Caitlin Miles about the city’s art history and his experience documenting the residential red zone Congratulations on receiving the Olivia Spencer Bower Award – what was it like to win? Thank you, it was really exciting to be given it. It’s only offered every two years so I’m really excited to be selected. It’s really rare to have an opportunity to work on your practice full-time as an artist and especially in New Zealand. Is that what this award allows you to do? Yes, so over the next year I will be able to focus on this project without having to balance working and my art. It gives artists a chance to work solely on their project and provides financial assistance. Is it nice to know you don’t have to worry about your finance for the next year? Yes it is. It’s not often you get a chance to do this so it will take a bit of stress off trying to balance my project around working. Do you work full time? No, I work part time at a few places. I’m a tutor, I teach
photography and I also work at the Physics Room, which is an art gallery. What is your project on? I have chosen to focus on Christchurch’s art history between 1932 and 1939 because it coincided with a period of time of Olivia Spencer Bowers being in Christchurch. So I decided to focus on that time and investigate what was happening in Christchurch and the similarities in that time to now. Do you have any idea of where this project will take you, or is it still quite new? It’s still quite new. I think I’ve got a few starting points. I’ll go to the research library at the Christchurch Art Gallery, which will probably be my starting point. Also, talking to people that knew Olivia, knew of her or collected her works. So it will start like that but I’m not quite sure where it will go or how the work will look, but yeah, that’s my starting point. Your last project involved

spending time in the residential red zone, can you tell me a bit about that? I have a show at the moment at the Centre of Contemporary Art and that work is based around Bill Sutton and his abandoned studio and residence in the residential red zone. So my work has just been about going there and to other sites and putting together research and work about these sites. What was it like going into those people’s homes? It was really overwhelming, but I guess I had, for lack of a
better word, this good intention. I thought this wasn’t being documented and it was such a massive part of Christchurch because these people once occupied these spaces and I suppose I just wanted to engage with the site in a way that previously no one had been doing. So why did you choose to look at the residential red zone? I guess I felt that there was an urgency, things were changing so fast and there wasn’t much documentation around these sites so I guess, for me, urgency was the main kind of concern that I had.
How long did this project take? This was part of my masters’ research so it started in 2015. It’s been a year-long project. Can you tell me a bit about some of the other work you have done? So I had a show at Blue Oyster Gallery in Dunedin and the work was specifically about the Bill Sutton house. It incorporated some historical photographs, which the Christchurch Art Gallery lent to me, and some construction work as well.

zone before it’s gone for good Where did you study art? I did my masters in sculpture at Canterbury University. Why did you decide to do your masters in sculpture? I guess it’s sculpture in the loosest sense of the term. The kind of work that I make is more installations so my work incorporated photography and objects and other materials. It’s not set sculptures like everyone thinks, it’s very loose. Have you lived here your whole life? No I wasn’t born here, I moved to Christchurch from Nelson in 2008. I moved here partly for art school. But I don’t know really – I guess it’s a bigger city. I lived in the central city for a while and I’ve lived in Addington for about a year and a half. When you were growing up did you always want to pursue art? I guess it’s kind of like that classic story of when you’re leaving high school and you don’t quite know what to do. So I enjoyed making and thinking about art, so I guess for me, it just made sense and it turned out to be the right decision for me. You also co-founded some art spaces, can you tell me about them?

My first space that I helped cofound was a space called Room 4, which was on St Asaph St. We decided to open that because we didn’t think there were many showing spaces, especially for emerging artists. I think that was the drive, focusing on emerging artists and not just from Christchurch. After that, we opened a gallery called Man Friday, which we had open for a year in 2015. What encouraged you to make these spaces?
It was really the lack of spaces for artists around the city and the need to provide for other artists and give them a chance. But also running an artist-run space is just a good way of encouraging community or building your own community, and working with other artists and getting more of the public aware of the artists around them. What have been some of the cool projects carried out in those spaces? There have been a few. When
Room 4 was running, there was a big factory behind us. I think they made garments, school uniforms I think. Each recycling day they would put out lots of boxes and because we didn’t have any shows planned, a group of us collected the boxes for about a month and we encouraged people to come in and we just kind of made some forts and it was just a really fun social thing to do. Who are some of your favourite artists?
That’s a tricky one to answer. I guess my peers and friends. But also the artists that I research, like Olivia Spencer Bower and Bill Sutton. Those people have the biggest influence on my work. How do they influence you? I guess I just respond to their art. Like mine is in no way similar to Bill Sutton’s, but it references him and his art and his career. That’s how I relate to artists I admire or enjoy. You have a lot on your plate, do you have much spare time? I guess my art is my spare time. So no, I don’t really have any. If I do have spare time, it’s pretty sparse and I haven’t had any for a while.

Masters of croquet golf By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE HORNBY Croquet Club hauled in 11 medals at the South Island Masters Games in Timaru. A group of about 10 from the club travelled to Timaru to compete in the croquet golf section recently. The team won six gold, three silver and two bronze medals. Club members Annette Wilson, Rosemary Beckett and Eric Ogier won two medals each in their singles and doubles competitions. Club committee member Neil Williams said it was “definitely one of the best years” the club has had.
“It is a good effort for one fairly small club,” he said. The club, made up of members aged 60 to 80 and based in the Hornby Domain, was set up to encourage people to get involved with croquet golf. Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoon from 1-3pm, the club room is open and anyone can call in to try out the game. Club treasurer Barbara McLeod said four years ago, the club had only eight members but now has a “thriving membership” of more than 30 players.

Young surfers get big chance By Hanna Reynolds SUMNER BEACH will host the Canterbury primary school surfing championships for the first time on Sunday. Organiser Steve Tyro of Point Surf Team said the competition provided a good platform for young surfers. “We are expecting the best surfers in the area and those just interested in going in a surf contest for the experience.” The competition includes the current year 6 New Zealand champion, Campbell Heasley, from Northside Boardriders in Waikuku. “(We’re) doing it to encourage kids to get into surfing whether it be for fun or for the competitive side, and to create some positive childhood memories,” Mr Tyro said. Surf club talent scouts from around New Zealand will be at the competition to identify unaffiliated boardriders who could get a chance to compete in the New Zealand primary school championships in Gisborne next year. “Surfing is included in the upcoming Olympics and these are age groups that may have the chance to go,” Mr Tyro said. “They need a starting point and organised events like this are a good start.” Winners of each division will
